Guide to Buying a Washing Machine for the First Time

If you are moving into your own home for the first time then you may be faced with the chore of buying appliances for your home.  One appliance that you will require is a washing machine.  Because a washing machine should last you for many years, you are not going to want to make a mistake.  You may be on the lookout for cheap washing machines but there are a few things you should know before heading out to buy the cheapest washing machine on the market.  Price should never be your only consideration when buying an appliance like this.  There are many other things you need to think about and the following guide should help you with this purchase.

The first thing that you should be thinking about is the capacity of the washing machine.  If you are on your own or living with one other person, then you do not have to worry so much about buying a washing machine with a large capacity.  However, if you have your own family or are planning on having a large family, then this might be a bit more important.  When you are looking at various washing machines, you might want to take a look inside them to see the different sizes of drum.

The amount of space that you have in your home is also something that you should be thinking of.  A lot of people fail to consider the space they have before they head out to buy a new washing machine and then they end up with something that is too large.  Measure the area where your washing machine will be placed.  You need to measure the width as well as the depth and take into consideration that front loading washing machines will have a door that will need room for opening.  If space is tight then you may want to think about a top loading washing machine instead.

The energy rating of the machine is equally important because this will determine how much the washing machine costs to run.  If you are looking for an economical washing machine then you need to buy one that has a higher energy rating.  You may have to pay a little bit more for this washing machine but it will save you money in the long run.

It is not very easy to find cheap washing machines these days but you can find good deals depending on when you buy them and where you buy them.  If you can wait until the sales then you may get quite a good discount on a really good washing machine.  You should also look online as this is where most of the best deals are to be had.

Teaching Agencies: Making a Choice

It’s not easy for a teacher to get established in a new city or a new country.  And many teachers arriving in a new place will be surprised at how foreign a new teaching establishment may seem to them.  A lack of local experience or detailed knowledge of the local system will not serve them well in seeking a permanent position.

The solution for many teachers will be to seek agency work.  It seems like a simple idea, find an agency, sign up, and sit back and wait for the assignments to come in.  Unfortunately, life is rarely that simple.

Not all teaching agencies are created equal, so it’s important to shop around.  There’s a whole range of agencies out there, from old, established companies with a good track record and books that may be hard to get onto, to new and possibly fly-by-night operations that may be willing to sign up all comers, but not so willing to service them well.

There’s one thing that works in your favour if you’re new to the agency game.  With the proliferation of agencies, the game has become highly competitive, so remember that it really pays to shop around.  And it’s also worth remembering that, if you’re new to a country or a city, some unscrupulous agencies are going to rely on your lack of familiarity with the local system to take advantage of you.

If possible, you should get in contact with teachers in your new area.  Ask them about the local education system, and especially ask them if they have any experience of agency teaching.  They may give you valuable information and, particularly, they are likely to know which agencies have a bad reputation.  They’re less likely to know which ones are reputable because it’s human nature for bad news to travel more rapidly.

In this way you should be able to narrow the field down to a manageable number of options.  Now it’s time to work your way through your short list of agencies, asking them if they will take you on.

This is the time to be particularly careful.  Ask the agencies what benefits they provide.  Many teaching agencies try to stand out from the competition by offering professional development courses, support groups or discount insurance schemes.  These extras may not be worth much in themselves, but a decent package of them can soon add up to real value.

Most of all, trust your instincts when you face to face with the agency people.  If an agency answers all your questions frankly and provides plenty of information, that’s a good start.  If they remember you when you call back the next day, that’s even better.  You’ll soon develop a feel for whether you’re going to be comfortable working with a particular agency or not.

Laminate Flooring and Sound Issues

Laminate flooring is becoming more and more popular throughout the U.K. due to its cost-effectiveness, durability, and ease of installation. As good as this type of flooring is however, it does have its drawbacks. One of them relates to the sound issues resulting from installation in a second-floor room.

Traditional wood flooring and carpet both tend to have natural sound deadening properties. When you install traditional materials in a second-floor room, you may hear some movement in the room below, but it's usually subtle and not very disturbing. But the nature of laminate flooring and how it's constructed means sound travels through it very quickly. Those sound waves can disturb anyone in the room underneath. Thankfully, there are two solutions to help mitigate this issue.

Acoustic Underlayment

Acoustic underlayment is a layer of material placed between the sub-floor and your laminate. It doesn't change the volume of the sound, only the tone. It won't help much on a brand-new floor, but if applied between an existing floor and a laminate it could be just enough of a barrier to stop the sound from being heard below. If it doesn't prevent it completely, it can at least tone it down to the point where it's no longer annoying.

Homasote or Cork

Homasote is a sound barrier product developed by an American company for use in a variety of commercial and residential applications. The manufacturers of this product claim unrivalled success as a sound barrier in walls, floors and ceilings. As an added bonus, it's made of 98% recycled materials. Homasote products and been manufactured and used in the United States since 1915, when the company's first product was introduced to insulate the interior of rail road cars. In the years since, the company has developed better performing products for use by professionals and DIY enthusiasts alike.

Cork is another excellent sound deadening material that you can use underneath your laminate flooring. The Homasote company makes a cork product, but so do dozens of other manufacturers in both North America and Europe. A layer of Cork placed between the sub floor and your laminate will almost certainly stop most sound issues. Cork's acoustical properties absorb sound waves and spread them across the entire surface of the material. This is the best way to defuse the sound and keep it from reaching the rooms below.

If you plan to install laminate flooring in a second floor flat, you might want to check with the building owner before doing so. There may be local regulations or property owner preferences that prevent you from installing laminate without some sort of sound barrier.

Learning to Recognized Quality Oak Furniture

With the explosion of the Internet and online retail outlets, it's now possible to buy just about anything you need cheaply from the web. That includes oak furniture. There are literally hundreds of furniture retailers with e-stores offering flat pack as well as fully assembled pieces. Not only that, but the proliferation of large DIY chains has given us countless choices of where to buy our furniture. The question is, how do you know if what you're buying is high quality furniture?

Veneer or Solid Wood

The first thing to look for when purchasing oak furniture is whether or not the piece is solid wood or veneer. A solid wood piece is made entirely of 100% oak with no other fillers added. Although you can't test this method online, you can tell a solid piece of oak furniture on the showroom floor simply by trying to move it. Solid wood furniture weighs a lot, as anyone who has such furniture already knows.

A veneer piece is made with particle board, plywood, or medium density fibre board (MDF) as the primary building material. Strips of genuine oak, called "veneers" will cover the less expensive woods and give the appearance of solid oak, even though it's not. Manufacturing furniture this way allows for cheaper prices and lower weights. Unfortunately, the quality of oak veneer is generally not as good as solid oak.

Look Inside

For pieces such as the chests of drawers, look inside to ensure the wood products match. Pull each drawer out and compare the weight and look of the wood used in the drawer to that used in the cabinet. Quality oak furniture will have the same wood for both drawer and cabinet. Sometimes, lower quality pieces may use less expensive woods on the back, bottom, and two sides, while using genuine oak for the front of the drawer.

Inspect all Joints

The most tell-tale sign of whether or not oak furniture is high quality is the tightness of the joints. Many of today's furniture manufacturers glue their joints but use no other fasteners. Some even forego the glue and simply staple joints together. The highest quality pieces will be joined with specialized cuts, glue, and some other sort of heavy-duty faster. Joints that are rigid and firm imply good quality, while joints that are not are good sign of poor workmanship.

In a situation where you're buying furniture online, contact the company and asked specific questions about veneers, additional types of wood, and joints. A company selling quality items will have no problem answering your questions in a straightforward manner. If you have trouble eliciting clear and concise answers, you might want to look at other options.
